Question by Biteme Spanky: Anyone else not able to make Husqvarna 4D embroidery software "send to the machine" using Windows 7?
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? If you are able to send to the machine from 4D running on Windows 7, did you have to download anything to make it work? If so, where did you find it? Thanks for any info.

The software installed just fine, the dongle drivers are working fine, and I have no trouble using the software. However, I can no longer send to the machine (Designer SE). I've been using Husqvarna embroidery software for 10 years with different machines and different operating systems, and this is a first. I usually have driver problems with the dongle when I upgrade, not the machine communication.

I have re-installed the machine communication software about 8 times. I have searched for new drivers and software updates and nothing. I have done a "Smart Update" and contacted Husqvarna tech support over 10 times in two months. They keep telling me to install the 64 bit drivers for Windows Vista, but when I try that, I get an error message which tells me I'm not running Vista. No kidding. When I told customer service about the message, they just said, "Install it anyway". Umm, how? It gives me an error message and then goes back to the main menu. When I asked them where I could get drivers for Windows 7, they said the driver for Vista "should" work. But...their software won't let me load it. As usual, their customer service is non-existent.

Help!
@tmclone - I just tried your suggestion and no joy. Thanks anyway - at least it was something I hadn't tried yet!

Ugh! I just went through this same thing last month. And yeah, their "customer service" is a total joke. They were NO HELP at all, like always. The only thing that worked for me was to change the compatibility for EVERY program to Windows XP. It took quite awhile since this lousy software is not simply one application but over 25 .exe applications cobbled together. Maybe "Husqvarna" is Swedish for "World's Worst Software". If I had it to do over again I would have bought ANY other brand instead. Oh well, too late now.

Hope my solution works for you...

Question by K D: Is there such a thing as a sewing machine that sews letters but isn't technically an "embroidery machine"?
I'm talking about built in fonts not just the "decorative embroidery stitch" you *could* use (if you're super skilled) to make letters. I'm shopping for a new sewing machine (mine broke) and I really want to be able to embroider monograms, names, dates, etc. but can't really afford the embroidery machine prices- and since I don't *need* the extra embroidery designs, I can't really justify the $ 300+ extra cost for just the ability to use fonts. I haven't been able to find just a sewing machine that does fonts, though... I'm thinking it's all or nothing with this, but thought I'd ask just in case you all knew of something I don't.
Thanks!
The "satin stitch" is exactly what I meant by "decorative embroidery stitch". That's what I had on my old machine, but it never quite worked right...or maybe I just never figured out how to use it without knotting. Not sure which. Are you saying there are sewing machines with alpha and numerical built-in??? I haven't seen this.

EDIT - Here is one - http://www.consumersearch.com/sewing-machines/bernina-activa-220

They are usually higher end sewing machines and cost can be as much a Brother entry level embroidery machine.

Like this one which is a combo sewing/embroidery machine with built-in fonts for monograms - http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Brother-SE-350-Embroidery-Sewing-Machine/3485904/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11555326

ORIGINAL ANSWER - All you will have in a sewing machine will be the built-in decorative stitches, which includes alpha and numerical.

A lower end combo sewing/embroidery machine or an embroidery only machine will do much better job. Try one while you are shopping and testing the machines, which dealers should let you do. They may have a trade-in at a reasonable price.

The embroidery machine's built-in alphas can be stitched small, medium or large.

Most likely you would need the large option for monograms, which a sewing machine cannot do.

The only other option is to out-line the letters and use a satin stitch/zig-zag stitch and that can be tricky. This one is from Singer, but doable with any sewing machine that can satin stitch - http://www.singerco.com/pdf/Darning_Embroidery.pdf

Question by Curious: Please rate the "Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine"?
I want to start sewing. i want to be able to make curtains, skirts, and the occasional halloween outfit. I really like the idea of this machine, because it also does embroidery to embellish small areas. Any experiences? any information on whether it will be discontinued soon? is there a better model, or brand??
I don't want to spend thousands +.
Is it too noisy?
Is it too heavy?
Is it easy for a beginner?
Can it use the feet for specialty projects?
Are the embroidery cards too expensive?

Any information would be appreciated.
