Cross stitch - the stitches are x-shaped and this forms the picture. Make sure that you use an even-weave fabric so that you can count the stitches. You can make use of waste canvas fabrics just in case you don't want to opt for the even-weave fabrics. This stitch is one of the most popular.
Knot stitches - this include the French knots, bullion knots, running stitch, whip and stem stitch, and the lazy daisy stitch. You can use the bullion stitch as filling stitch. This is very common in Brazilian embroidery.
Aside from that, you can also do colonial knot which used mostly in candle wicking.
